Mayor Elaine Scruggs Appointed To Arizona Military Affairs Commission

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs has been appointed to the Arizona Military Affairs Commission.

The mayor’s appointment was made by former Senate President Ken Bennett.

The 15-member commission meets regularly with the governor, president of the Arizona Senate and speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives to provide recommendations on military issues and provide updates on the commission.

The commission also reviews applications and makes recommendations for monies to be awarded from the state’s military installation fund.

In 2004, Gov. Janet Napolitano signed a comprehensive military bill that included the establishment of the military installation fund. As a result, $4.8 million is now appropriated annually to the fund for preservation and enhancement projects at military facilities in Arizona.

Scruggs recent appointment to the Arizona Military Affairs Commission marks her latest involvement in preserving the mission of military installations in the state.

Under her leadership, Glendale championed several legislative bills to ensure compatible land uses around Arizona’s military facilities. These proactive measures have led to national recognition for Arizona, and Glendale’s commitment to protect the viability of Luke Air Force Base’s military mission.

Scruggs also helped lead efforts to annex Luke Air Force Base into Glendale’s city limits in 1995 to protect the base from incompatible land-use encroachment and ensure the city had a voice and active role in Luke’s future.

In addition, she served on the Governor’s Military Facilities Task Force in 2003, which developed several recommendations that were included in the comprehensive military bill signed by the governor in 2004.
