Cactus District - Meet Your Councilmember - Phil Lieberman

Phil LiebermanCouncilmember Phil Lieberman was elected to represent the Cactus District in March of 1992 and was re-elected in 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008. In the past he has served as Chairman of the Alternative Transportation, Budget and Utilities Council Committees. Councilmember Lieberman received his education from Colorado College, The University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Glendale Community College and Phoenix Community College. He has more than 120 hours of college credit. He also has attended 24 specialized classes put on by the National League of Cities (NLC), where he serves on, and is past chair of the University Communities Committee. He is also on the executive board of the NLC’s Leadership Training Council and is on the Policy and Advocacy Committee of the NLC Human Development Policy Board.

Prior to being elected he was very involved in civic affairs in Glendale. He has always believed in and worked for Glendale’s future. Councilmember Lieberman’s community activities include memberships or leadership positions in 16 civic organizations including: Chairman of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce in 1978; Founder and past chairman of the Glendale Catlin Court Association; Chairman and Lobbyist for the Arizona Motorcycle Dealers Association; Founder and first vice chair of the Downtown Development Corporation; Five Term President of the Arizona Chapter of the 10th Mountain Division; Member of Post 29 American Legion Association; and Chairman of the Glendale Veterans Coalition. Lieberman will also serve as Master of Ceremonies at the Friends of Marty Robbins Annual Celebration in Wilcox, AZ.

Lieberman served honorably in “C” Company Second Engineers 10th Mountain Division, following the end of WWII. He was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He founded and operated three successful retail businesses in Glendale for over 20 years. In 1985 Councilmember Lieberman was awarded “Dealer of the Year” by United States Suzuki, an organization with more than 1300 members. Councilmember Lieberman’s business ownership necessitated that he be highly skilled in finance, legal contracts, budgets, and personnel management. All of which has been very helpful in his position on the Glendale City Council. He now is semi-retired although he still owns Lieberman Enterprises with his wife and does some sales and management consulting. Councilmember Lieberman was born in Chicago, but has been an Arizona resident for 57 years and a member of the Glendale Community for 45 years. He and his wife Nita have adult children who attended Glendale Schools from kindergarten through junior college.
