The Glendale Fire Department Honor Guard was created in 1997. The members are active Glendale Firefighters who volunteer their time to represent the department during special events such as the posting of colors, patriotic parades, memorials, funerals and other civic functions. The group participates in dozens of events throughout the state of Arizona each year.
There are 18 total
members and besides the color guard, the honor guard includes a traditional bagpiper and drummer. Honoring traditions and following protocol is a top priority for the group including proper display of the US and Arizona State flags in a dignified and appropriate manner according to national and state law.
Each year the Glendale Honor Guard/Pipe and Drum Unit travel to Colorado Springs, CO for the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Fallen Firefighters Memorial. This somber event draws over 700 honor guard/pipe and drum units from all over the United States and Canada, to pay respect to those who have died in the line of duty. This emotional event culminates with a flag presentation to surviving family members, followed by the names of the fallen being permanently engraved into a marble wall of memory.
